World Champions set to be crowned at 2016 Stance ISA World Adaptive

Team USA leads heading into final day, Brazil close on their tail

La Jolla, California, December 10, 2016 – Excellent conditions greeted the world’s best adaptive surfers on the second day of the 2016 Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship presented by Vissla and the City of San Diego. The stage was set for the final day of competition on Sunday where the individual medalists and historic first-ever Team World Champion will be crowned.
Team USA put on a solid performance and moved into first place in the overall team standings, just a slight margin ahead of Team Brazil in second.

“The passion and energy of these surfers is second to none,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “These surfers’ determination, dedication and passion for Surfing will culminate tomorrow when we crown the World Champions. Regardless of who wins the medals, we will finish the contest tomorrow knowing that the sport of Adaptive Surfing has taken a huge step forward and will continue to spread joy to the lives of others around the world.”
Saturday morning at La Jolla Shores saw an increase in swell, providing clean 2-3+ foot waves and excellent, glassy conditions. All the six classification divisions competed where the top two waves from either of the first two rounds were totaled to advance onto the single elimination rounds.
South Africa’s JP Veaudry and Brazil’s Fellipe Lima were the stand out performers, respectively earning the two highest heats of the day with 17.94 and 17.40.
Llwelyn Williams, the sole representative of Team Wales, powered through the AS-2 division for standing and kneeling surfers with above the knee amputations. In Round 2 Williams posted a heat total of 12.67, beating the defending Gold Medal Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart (AUS). Williams continued his strong performance in the single elimination Quarterfinals and advanced through to the Semifinals on Sunday.
“The waves today are great, better than yesterday,” said Williams. “It’s a huge thing to be representing my country. I don’t want to let them down. I am going to rest well tonight and hope for good waves for the Finals tomorrow.”

La Jolla, California, 10 de diciembre, 2016 – La Jolla Shores se vistió de gala ofreciendo excelentes condiciones para este segundo día del Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship 2016 presentado por Vissla y la Ciudad de San Diego. El domingo será el día de las Finales donde se coronará a los medallistas individuales y al que será el primer equipo Campeón Mundial de Surf Adaptado de la historia.
El equipo de Estados Unidos se coloca primero en la clasificación general tras una gran actuación, aunque seguido muy de cerca por el equipo de Brasil.

“La pasión y energía de estos surfistas es algo sin precedentes” dijo el Presidente de la ISA Fernando Aguerre. “La determinación, dedicación y pasión que estos atletas tienen por el Surfing se verá recompensada mañana con la coronación de los Campeones del Mundo. Sin importar quien gane, mañana terminaremos la competición sabiendo que el deporte del Surf Adaptado ha dado un gran paso adelante y que continuará contagiando su alegría por todo el mundo”.
El sábado a la mañana se podía ver como el swell crecía y ofrecía condiciones muy glassy con olas de alrededor de 1m para goce y disfrute de todos los asistentes en La Jolla Shores. Las seis categorías volvieron al agua compitiendo por obtener las dos mayores puntuaciones y avanzar a las rondas de eliminación.
JP Veaudry (Sudáfrica) y Fellipe Lima (Brasil) fueron los protagonistas del día al obtener las dos puntuaciones más altas del día con un 17.94 y un 17.40 respectivamente.
Llwelyn Williams, único representante del Equipo de Gales, realizó una gran actuación en su categoría de AS-2 donde se encuentran los surfistas con amputaciones por encima de la rodilla. En ronda 2, Williams conseguía vencer al defensor de la Medalla de Oro Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart (AUS) con un total de 12.67 y su racha continuaría durante los cuartos de final hasta asegurarse un puesto en las Semifinales del domingo.
“Está habiendo muy buenas olas, bastante mejor que ayer” decía Williams. “Es un gran honor el poder representar a mi país y pienso descansar bien esta noche para darlo todo mañana en las Finales. Esperemos que sigamos teniendo buenas olas”.
